Sensor-Assisted Communication for Wireless Smart Devices

Diverse sensors mounted on mobile devices can assist wireless communication to achieve higher performance in certain contexts such as rate adaptation during mobility. In this project, we experimented with two topics in sensor-assisted communication. The first is GPS-assisted directional communication for vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) communication where the GPS location information of road-side units (RSUs) can be used by vehicles to direct their antennas so that wider coverage can be obtained in V2R communication. The second is movement detection based Wi-Fi interface deactivation, where fast movement detected by accelerometer along with gyroscope and gravity sensor is used to switch off the Wi-Fi interface and turn on the cellular interface in order to prevent service discontinuity and to save battery power. The ideas have been simulated or implemented, and the investigation results will be published in papers and in software.
